The Three-Faced Puppet is one of the first bosses you can encounter in Phantom Blade Zero. If you've already met her near the waterfall, you might not have realized that she has an entire questline of her own. As the quest unfolds, you'll discover who's hiding behind the puppet's masks and even get another chance to fight her. In this guide, we'll explain how to complete Triple Threat and defeat all three enemies in the final battle.
How to Start Triple Threat
Head to Weeping Creek Valley and travel west from The Beginning bell toward the cliffs near the waterfall. Climb the wooden platforms toward Broken Puppet Valley and keep an eye on the right side of the path. You'll find a ladder leading down to a small ledge. At the bottom, activate The Lady's Rift bell and interact with the glowing statue to enter the Rift.
Inside, you'll face the Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet. At this stage, she can break through Soul's defenses easily, and bringing her down with your starting weapon will take a lot of effort. If you want to beat her on your first attempt, stick to short attack strings and always keep some Sha-Chi in reserve for defense. When you stagger her, unleash a stronger combo, then prepare to defend against her next attacks.
After the encounter, check your quest journal and see whether you have the Three-Headed Doll. If you lost the fight, it's worth checking whether the encounter was registered before returning, as this stage can count even if you're defeated. If you decide to go back and win, upgrade your weapon first and bring the healing items you're comfortable using. The next clues won't appear until much later in the game, so you're free to continue the main story after visiting the Rift.
Where to Find the Three-Faced Puppet’s Memory Flowers
Continue through the story until you reach Mirage Estate in Pangzhen. As you explore the area, you'll come across three memories belonging to the Three-Faced Puppet. After each fight, we recommend searching the arena carefully before moving on to the next room and interacting with the Memory Flowers themselves.
The Wandering Healer
Reach the Training Grounds bell and defeat Yuding, No. 12 Crescent Blade Puppet. Don't leave the arena immediately after the fight. Check the right side of the area for a Memory Flower near the bell. Listen to The Wandering Healer memory, then continue exploring the estate.
Frost and Chaos
The next flower is in the Mourning Hall, where you'll fight Qiu Feng, the Crimson Boneblade. Once you've defeated him, return to the altar and examine it. You'll find the Frost and Chaos memory here. If you've already beaten Qiu Feng and moved on, go back to the room where you fought him and check the altar.
Three Souls as One
Look for the final memory in Leng Tu's Study. Examine the mechanism that moves a scroll aside to reveal a hidden passage. Follow the corridor to the end and interact with the Three Souls as One Memory Flower. Once you've collected all three, check your journal. The quest will eventually lead you back to Mirrorwood, but you'll need to prepare a weapon before returning.
How to Get Blazing Edge
For the final fight, you'll need Blazing Edge. You obtain it by Soul Tempering the two-handed sword Sanguine Reach, which you can pick up from the weapon rack near Forge at the Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley. If you walked past the rack earlier in the game, fast travel to the Outpost bell and check the weapons beside the blacksmith. You'll then need to collect both flame fragments required for Soul Tempering.
First Fragment: Zhu Yuan Beneath Sha-Chi Tower
From northern Pangzhen, head toward Meigu Lake and follow the shoreline to Sha-Chi Tower. Near the barrier blocking the way to a lift, find an exploding enemy. Lure it toward the obstruction and retreat to a safe distance before it detonates. Once the explosion clears the way, you can use the lift. Deeper inside the tower, defeat Zhu Yuan, the Searing Blade, and collect the first piece, Scorching Flames.
Second Fragment: The Third Lóng Pillar Challenge
Head to the Lóng Pillar east of Meigu Lake. To earn the required material, you'll need to complete the third battle against the Gold-Masked One. If you've skipped the Lóng Pillar challenges so far, check your progress. The opponents in this challenge series appear in sequence, even if you visit the pillars in a different order. After the third encounter, make sure you have the second piece, The Quenched Flaming Grip, along with Scorching Flames.
Where to Soul Temper the Sword
With the sword and both materials in hand, return to Myst at the Order's underground tavern in Pangzhen. In the Soul Tempering menu, select Sanguine Reach and turn it into Blazing Edge. Before leaving the tavern, equip the new weapon in one of your two primary weapon slots and keep it equipped through the end of the fight. This will unlock the final phase and allow you to claim the full reward.
How to Find Yucong in the Frozen Mirrorwood
Finish the story section in Mirage Estate and return to the Crimson Forest. We recommend starting from the Mirrorwood Entrance bell and heading toward the Burial Grounds. After the cold sets in, a path across the frozen water will open up. Follow the changed route deeper into the forest, toward the northeastern part of the area and the site of your earlier battle with Bai Chilian. Activate the new bells along the way so you won't have to repeat the entire route if you're defeated.
Keep in mind that the forest may still look the way it did during your first visit, with the water not yet frozen. If that happens, check your story progress. For instance, the passage might be open while your journal still tells you to find the memories. In that case, go back for the missing flower. Before entering the arena, also make sure the Soul Tempered Blazing Edge is equipped in one of your primary weapon slots. When you're ready, replenish your healing supplies at the bell and head toward Yucong, No. 34 Twisted Puppet.
How to Defeat Yucong
Phase One: Duel with the Puppet
The opening of the fight resembles your first encounter in the Rift. Wait for Yucong to finish an attack sequence, answer with a few regular strikes, then get ready to defend again. It's better to save your stronger attacks and Blazing Edge's charged move until you've broken her guard. Don't use all your healing items in the first phase. Later, you'll need to keep track of her masks and your distance from multiple enemies.
Phase Two: Steel, Frost, and Chaos
In the second part of the fight, Yucong switches between the Steel Mask, Frost Mask, and Chaos Mask. We recommend holding off on counterattacks while she's in Steel form and waiting until her combo ends. Against Frost, avoid getting caught in repeated attacks, since they'll start building up Freeze. When Chaos form becomes active, move away from the flames and watch both your Sha-Chi and health.
Phase Three: Three Puppets in One Arena
In the final phase, Yucong splits into three bodies. Create some distance so you can keep several enemies in view at once, and don't get drawn into chasing one puppet to the edge of the arena. It's better to focus on one target and reduce the number of enemies than to spread your damage across all three. If Chaos form is consistently the first to rush you, try taking her out while the other two are farther away.
When several puppets attack at once, prioritize avoiding their strikes and getting back into a good position. Charge your fire attack only when you have enough time to finish the windup or immediately after breaking your chosen target's guard. If another puppet has already closed the distance, avoid lengthy combos and back away. As the number of enemies drops, you'll have more time to heal and land charged attacks safely.
Triple Threat Quest Rewards
After the fight, collect Freezing Chaos and Chaos Iron Fragment II. This sword lets you switch between Steel, Frost, and Chaos forms by combining block with a heavy attack. Steel is useful for dealing damage and breaking guards, Frost builds up Freeze, and Chaos drains health and Sha-Chi. It's also worth keeping the fragment for Soul Tempering the dual-wielded weapon Sanguine Twin if you plan to assemble the Chaos Twin Daggers.
