This space trading and combat simulator is set in a future where humanity has mastered hyperspace travel. Starting out in a small shuttle, the player can move freely between star systems and choose how to make a living.
Money can be earned through trading, transporting people or cargo, taking missions, or attacking other ships. Planets offer missions and trade, as well as opportunities to buy ships or upgrade a current vessel with weapons and equipment; ship classes range from shuttles to large frigates. Escape Velocity Nova features six mutually exclusive storylines, and the player's choices can affect the political alignment of the game world.
