Under Defeat is a vertically scrolling shooter set in a drawn-out war between a German-speaking Empire and an English-speaking Union. The player pilots a helicopter across the battlefield in a depiction of a futuristic past, moving in eight directions.
The helicopter can fire and launch bombs, while a small satellite-like unit attacks independently. Turning the helicopter slightly angles its shots, and charging the unit requires a pause in firing. The game offers both its original arcade format and New Order Mode, which adapts the presentation to a widescreen format.
