Moon Patrol is an arcade shooter set on the Moon, where a Luna City police officer drives a lunar rover across the surface. The vehicle moves continually forward over a scrolling landscape, and the player jumps over craters and rocks or shoots them. Shots travel both forward and upward, letting the rover attack ground obstacles and flying saucers.
The two courses are divided into checkpoints marked with letters, with five major checkpoints introducing new stages. A route map appears on screen, while indicators warn of aerial attacks, minefields and enemies approaching from behind. Stage times are compared with the average, awarding bonus points for faster runs.
