The Happy Hereafter is a casual strategy game about the newly dead building a settlement in the underworld. The player oversees the souls as they arrive and helps them settle in by providing food and housing. Growing the village involves constructing homes and other buildings, gathering resources, and earning money.
Missions provide goals for expanding the settlement, with some requiring special artifacts. The player explores unusual locations, searches for hidden secrets, and develops the village into a large town. Story scenes are presented in a comic-book style.
