Popotan is a Japanese visual novel about Chris, a drifter who meets three sisters—Ai, Mai, and Mii—and their maid, all living in a mansion. The story follows a mostly predetermined course, while player choices can branch into different character storylines and affect relationships.
Gameplay centers on reading dialogue and Chris’s thoughts, with decision points and transitions to new locations breaking up the text. The main romantic routes focus on the sisters; after completing one, the story can also turn to other characters. Certain parts of Mii’s route feature a music mini-game in which players time their hits on incoming balls to fill a magic meter. Its outcome affects the story, and completing routes unlocks additional content, including a story featuring Unagi.
