Pitfall! is a platform game set in a jungle, where explorer Pitfall Harry searches for treasure while avoiding hazards. The player has 20 minutes to collect treasures across 255 screens, which change whenever Harry reaches the edge of the current one.
Harry can jump over obstacles, swing on vines, and descend into underground passages. His route is threatened by pits, water, logs, fire, and animals; some hazards cost points, while others take a life. Underground paths can shorten the journey through parts of the world, but obstacles may force Harry to turn back and lose time.
