A fighting game with platforming elements built around sword duels played as a tug-of-war. In Nidhogg, two players battle across an arena that stretches in both directions: defeating an opponent gains ground toward a goal, but does not end the match. New opponents continually appear along the way, so an advantage can quickly shift.
Armed fighters can lunge, parry, and throw their swords; without a weapon, they can punch, kick, roll, and jump off walls. A series of victories grants the right of way to fight or evade opponents while advancing toward the goal zone. Arenas feature different layouts and chokepoints that shape the tactics of each match.
