An exciting sandbox focused on freedom of action and exploring a practically endless open world. Created through procedural generation, it is filled with 3D blocks that can be processed to craft items, tools, and weapons, as well as build structures and mechanisms. Players have complete freedom of action: they can craft objects, destroy them, fight monsters that come out at night, and cooperate or compete with other players.

The game uses a simple but appealing pixel art style that evokes nostalgia for the era of arcade 2D games, with simple textures and bright, rich colors. Despite its apparent simplicity, Minecraft can create breathtaking and beautiful landscapes, from snow-covered mountains to green meadows and deep oceans.

Before Microsoft acquired the franchise in 2014, Minecraft was considered an indie game created by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson. After the rights were purchased, several spin-offs were developed and released: Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Dungeons , and Minecraft Legends. Social media, adaptations, franchise merchandise, and annual Minecon conventions played an important role in popularizing the game.

As a sandbox through and through, Minecraft has no backstory or plot in its base version, nor does it include tools for creating scenarios. After creating a new world, the player's avatar appears at a random location on the map, surrounded by various natural landscapes such as forests, mountains, oceans, and deserts. Further goals and objectives depend on the selected mode.

“Creative” lets you bring to life your boldest ideas: build a castle on a mountaintop, create an underwater city, or launch a huge factory. From the start, you can use any blocks and materials without being distracted by hostile mobs or worrying about dying from a fall or drowning. To make building easier, you can fly.

“Survival” reveals Minecraft’s full potential. Players start with no resources and must work their way up from a digging stick and stone axe to advanced tools and laser weapons. They’ll need shelter to protect themselves from mobs on the very first night. They must manage resources, keep an eye on their health and hunger, and be ready for anything.

“Hardcore” is an extreme version of “Survival” mode. The game is set to the highest difficulty, which cannot be changed. If a player dies, the world is deleted and they have to start all over again. This mode is for those who crave a real challenge and are ready to test their survival skills.

The way the game world is built is a key feature of Minecraft. It consists of billions of cubic blocks, each 1x1x1 in size, creating the feeling of a “LEGO” world. Different types of blocks (dirt, stone, wood, liquid, ore, plants), their unique properties (hardness, transparency, light level, and so on), and how they interact with each other imitate the real world. Some types of blocks are affected by gravity and will fall if the space beneath them is destroyed.

Players can freely dig all over the place, removing blocks with tools such as shovels, axes, pickaxes, and more. These blocks go into the inventory and can be used for building, crafting, and non-practical purposes such as changing the landscape. For example, you can set up a steady supply of resources to help you progress, but it also won’t hurt to dig a trench around your base or block off paths and approaches to make it easier to defend. Fans build entire fortified districts using this mechanic.

The world of Minecraft is divided into biomes—forests, jungles, deserts, oceans, taiga, and more. There are over 60 in total, including subtypes, each with its own unique geography, vegetation, and resources. Some biomes are home only to certain mobs or resources, while others are more dangerous because they have high-level enemies. There are also abandoned castles and dungeon farms—small labyrinths full of dangers where lucky players can find chests with rare items.

Minecraft gameplay is much deeper than simply digging. It all starts with exploring the area around you, and later, exploring other biomes. Along the way, you’ll actively search for resources: wood can be used for building and as fuel for workstations, stone is needed for tools and construction, and food, both plant- and animal-based, keeps your character alive, and so on.

It’s hard to imagine starting Minecraft without a temporary shelter to protect yourself from mobs and nighttime attacks. Over time, once you’ve gathered resources and explored the area, you’ll need to choose the best place to build a proper base. Depending on the player’s building skills, a base protects against mob attacks and stores gathered resources, tools, food, and other items. It also helps you organize your inventory and makes it easier to access all the materials you need using a system of chests.

Every item in Minecraft has its own crafting recipe, which shows which resources to combine and in what order to create it. The wide variety of blocks is what makes crafting items possible. Blocks stored in your inventory can be processed using workstations, of which there are several types: a furnace, a smithing table, a loom, an enchanting table, a brewing stand, a stonecutter, and more.

Your character is very vulnerable, so you’ll need to equip them with weapons and sturdy armor. They can also wear clothes over their armor, which only affect their appearance. Minecraft has no progression system; everything depends on how far you’ve progressed: how many recipes you’ve found, how much you’ve built, and how good your inventory is. Other activities include decorating your base, growing crops, breeding animals, and trading with other players.

Minecraft’s objectives and gameplay mechanics don’t depend on whether you play solo or together. However, there are a few differences. In single-player mode, the player has full control over the world and its settings: you can change game modes, manage the world’s rules and settings, and progress without other players’ influence.

Multiplayer is available either on a single server or over a local network. There is no limit to the number of players, but the server and its rules are managed by the administrator. Players can explore the world, fight side by side or compete, share resources, and work together on creative projects.
