This arcade driving simulator puts a sports car on a course split into speed and stunt sections. Hard Drivin' uses 3D polygonal graphics and a first-person view; the goal is to complete laps as quickly as possible while avoiding traffic and obstacles. The stunt section includes a vertical loop and an open drawbridge.
In manual transmission mode, the clutch must be used, and incorrect shifting can stall the car. Progress is marked by checkpoints, with passing one midway through the course granting extra time. After a crash, the game shows an aerial replay before placing the car back at the last checkpoint reached.
