This Japanese visual novel follows the Fifth Holy Grail War, a conflict between mages in the city of Fuyuki. The protagonist, Shirou Emiya, becomes involved in the battle, where mages known as Masters fight alongside their Servants. Fate/stay night is divided into three story routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven’s Feel.
The story unfolds through dialogue and static two-dimensional character images, with occasional interludes covering parallel events or characters’ backstories. At certain points, the player chooses between several actions, affecting how the narrative proceeds. In each route, Shirou grows closer to a heroine and encounters different participants in the war.
