Sobre el juego

Battlefield 6 is a multiplayer first-person shooter and the thirteenth game in the main series. The developers have returned to the formula beloved by gamers, with four classes and large-scale battles for 64 players, and set the game in the modern day. Full combined-arms warfare is available on only four maps, while on most of the others, vehicle use is limited or ruled out entirely. In previous entries in the series, large maps generally always supported the full range of vehicles.

Thanks to the updated Frostbite engine, the game delivers a stable frame rate on all platforms. The developers have dropped ray tracing, as the engine provides high levels of detail for characters, weapons, vehicles, and environments without it. Lighting and materials are brought to life through surface reflections, dust particles, and thick smoke screens. The destruction system realistically simulates how individual buildings and structures behave: walls develop cracks, beams break, and brickwork crumbles into fragments. However, destruction is localized and does not allow the map to be completely altered or destroyed.

The sound design heightens the sense of immersion. Weapons and vehicles sound detailed, from the creak of a tank turret turning to falling shell casings and the roar of jet engines. Explosions are accompanied by powerful sound effects, and debris scatters with a distinctive crack. Positional audio is meant to help players orient themselves by listening for footsteps, gunfire, and moving vehicles. In practice, however, it can be inconsistent and does not always give an accurate sense of where enemies are.

Background

Battlefield 6 - Background

The events take place in 2027–2028. The young and rapidly growing private military company PAX Armata offers its services to governments, promising a swift response and decisive action without political compromises. Seeking to speed up decision-making amid sluggish international bureaucracy, PAX carries out a series of brazen, provocative operations.

PAX Armata fighters attack a NATO base in the mountains of Georgia. The alliance fails to respond swiftly or cohesively, and the situation soon worsens with the assassination of the NATO Secretary General. This triggers a leadership crisis, disagreements between member states, and effectively paralyzes decision-making.

Against this backdrop, several European countries announce their withdrawal from NATO, preferring alternative mechanisms for ensuring their own security and handing them over to PAX Armata. By signing contracts and seizing strategic assets, the PMC expands its influence, while local conflicts escalate into a full-scale global war between PAX and what remains of NATO, primarily the United States and the United Kingdom.

Story and Campaign

Battlefield 6 - Story and Campaign

Structurally, Battlefield 6’s single-player mode is a rail shooter in the style of Call of Duty, focused on infantry missions with occasional vehicle sections. It’s a full-fledged story campaign with set-piece missions, cutscenes, and scripted moments. Players must complete nine missions, each lasting around 30–45 minutes.

The story follows Dagger 1-3, a Marine squad that fights against PAX. The protagonist is Sergeant Dylan Murphy, who loses his squad at the start of the conflict. As the story progresses, he works with other members of the Dagger unit. The main antagonist is Alexander Kincaid, head of PAX Armata. The missions revolve around assault operations, defending positions, and clearing enemy forces from areas.

The story unfolds across two timelines: in the present, the protagonist talks with his liaison, Melissa Mills, while the main story is told through flashbacks to completed operations. Missions take place in various regions around the world, including Georgia, Egypt, Tajikistan, Gibraltar, and New York. Scenarios range from chases and bomb disposal operations to preventing terrorist attacks, sniper missions across large areas, and assignments to protect key characters.

Each mission includes collectibles and additional challenges. The campaign features Challenge Expert challenges, which require players to meet specific conditions. Progress in the single-player campaign unlocks cosmetic and gameplay rewards for multiplayer mode.

Multiplayer maps

Battlefield 6 - Multiplayer maps

At launch, Battlefield 6 featured nine maps, adapted for different modes through the Combat Zones system. This technology creates separate zones with unique layouts and object placements for each mode (over 25 variations), balancing large-scale “Conquest” matches and compact infantry battles alike.

  • Siege of Cairo — Cairo’s center, packed with skyscrapers and narrow streets. Vertical combat between buildings is combined with tank ambushes on wide avenues. The map is suited to large-scale battles with vehicles, assaults, and defending positions;
  • New Sobek City — the outskirts of Cairo, with unfinished neighborhoods partly buried beneath sand dunes. Best suited to tactical firefights at medium and long range, with limited use of armored vehicles;
  • Iberian Offensive — Gibraltar. A compact, narrow, multi-layered urban space where heavy vehicles have limited dominance and verticality is prominent;
    Saints Quarter — Gibraltar’s Old Town, a pedestrian area with narrow streets and alleys. The focus is on close-quarters combat, clearing buildings, and infantry teamwork;
  • Mirak Valley — the largest map at launch, a mountain valley in Tajikistan. Its vast open spaces offer opportunities for aircraft, sniper operations, and large-scale clashes. It suits all modes where range and visibility matter;
  • Liberation Peak — a mountain range in Tajikistan with sharp changes in elevation. Combat has a strong vertical dimension, focusing on infantry, snipers, and the use of all types of vehicles, including aircraft;
  • Empire State — an urban infantry map in Brooklyn, New York. Narrow streets, rooftops, and alleys create dense close-quarters combat zones. Vehicles are rarely used, with an emphasis on mobility and precise team coordination;
  • Manhattan Bridge — a map featuring battles on the bridge and in the surrounding areas of New York City. It offers opportunities for infantry, armored vehicles, and helicopters, combining air and ground combat;
    Operation Firestorm — a remake of a Battlefield 3 classic with an updated destruction system.

The play spaces are rich in natural cover: hills, rocks, building ruins, vehicles, and warehouse areas provide defensive positions and opportunities for tactical maneuvers. The architecture combines high-rise buildings and small houses with destructible facades, while interiors feature distinct rooms — kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and hallways.

The Tactical Destruction system makes destruction meaningful: building debris remains on the map and creates new cover. Infantry maps focus on micro-destruction — taking out stairs and floors and blasting through walls with underbarrel grenade launchers.

Map design provides several routes to objectives: direct approaches, flanking routes, paths through buildings, and exits onto neighboring streets. Verticality is built into multistory buildings, mountain slopes, and engineering structures, while assault ladders provide access to rooftops and balconies.

Gameplay and Combat System

Battlefield 6 - Gameplay and Combat System

The game returns to the classic four-class system:

  • Assault: the leader of the push. Uses the Deploy Beacon (formerly the respawn beacon) and can carry two primary weapons. The passive ability speeds up objective capture and gets the soldier out of “combat status” sooner to begin regenerating;
  • Engineer: an expert in vehicles. The Mechanized Infantry ability protects allied vehicles from being captured by the enemy and grants the Engineer resistance to explosions. Equipped with a torch and heavy anti-tank guided missiles;
  • Support: a combat medic and supplier. Revives teammates with a defibrillator (instantly) and distributes resources. The Squad Supply ability lets allies “run up and grab” ammo or a medkit directly from the soldier without waiting for a supply bag to be thrown;
  • Recon: a sniper. Has the Aim Spotting skill (automatically spots enemies while aiming) and a reconnaissance drone. C4 explosives for sabotage are still in the arsenal.

Weapon access in Battlefield 6 is universal, but each class develops its own weapon proficiency:

  • Assault: bonuses for assault rifles (faster weapon raise and quicker transition from sprinting to shooting);
  • Engineer: bonuses for submachine guns (improved hip-fire accuracy);
  • Support: bonuses for light machine guns (greater stability while suppressing);
  • Recon: bonuses for sniper rifles (breath control and no scope glint at close range).

Ballistics are designed to require minimal lead. Bullet velocity is high, and bullet drop is noticeable only at long range. Switching between primary and secondary weapons takes 1–2 seconds. All weapon types can be fired from the hip and while moving, with varying effectiveness depending on class and attachments.

Weapon customization includes 8–10 attachments per weapon: barrels, handguards, scopes with different magnifications, grips, suppressors, underbarrel grenade launchers, and laser sights. A stock reduces visual recoil, improved ammunition reduces damage drop-off over distance, a suppressor removes the firing marker from the map, and scopes offer different magnifications.

The new Kinesthetic Combat system lets players:

  • Drag wounded teammates to cover before reviving them;
  • Use a tactical roll when falling to minimize damage;
  • Breach doors with a shoulder charge or use assault ladders (an Assault gadget) for vertical gameplay.

Vehicles include tanks, APCs, helicopters, jeeps, and ATVs. Tanks can be equipped with different types of missiles: homing, manually guided, and fast-reloading missiles. Vehicle attachments include smoke screens to break missile locks, auto-repair to speed up recovery, and active protection. The base game also includes aircraft—helicopters and planes.

Teamplay and progression

Battlefield 6 - Teamplay and progression

Battlefield 6 has completely overhauled its scoring system to reward team play. A player who actively heals teammates, repairs vehicles, and resupplies ammunition can top the leaderboard even with a negative kill/death ratio. For example:

  • Support (Medic): with a defibrillator, can revive teammates to 100% health in one second;
  • Engineer: thanks to the “Mechanized Infantry” system, an engineer inside a tank speeds up the main gun’s reload;
  • Assault: their spawn beacons now have a limited range, forcing players to place them closer to capture points;
  • Recon: information from their drone is transmitted in real time to the entire squad’s minimaps (auto-spotting).

Progression is based on earning experience (XP) through combat and supporting the team. Rank reflects your overall account level and gradually unlocks access to content, while the Season Pass (Battle Pass) is focused mainly on cosmetic rewards. After Rank 30, progression slows noticeably. Unlocking a new weapon and its full set of attachments requires a significant time investment: leveling up one weapon can take dozens of hours of gameplay. Some weapons are also locked behind separate challenges, which require a high level of commitment and precise adherence to their conditions.

Team upgrades include highlighting squads in green and the updated CommoRose 2.0, which lets players mark not only enemies but also specific needs, such as “need repairs” or “provide covering fire.”

Multiplayer

Battlefield 6 - Multiplayer

At launch, Battlefield 6 offered 8 modes, including reimagined classics and entirely new formats:

  • Conquest: The classic 32v32 battle (up to 100 players on some maps). Teams fight for control of objectives. A “ticket bleed” system is in effect when a team holds most of the sectors;
  • Escalation: BF6’s flagship mode. This hybrid of Conquest and Rush is divided into 5 phases. The intensity of the battle increases with each round, while the play area shifts, forcing teams to adapt their tactics. In the final phase, only infantry is available amid total destruction;
  • Breakthrough: Attackers must capture and hold all objectives in a sector to advance;
  • Rush: The attacking team must destroy objectives across the map one by one and prevent defenders from disabling them before detonation. Defenders, in turn, focus on preventing charges from being planted and disarming those that have been activated;
  • Team Deathmatch: The classic 8v8 format on small maps without vehicles. Teams fight to 100 kills. Instant respawns and small maps assembled from larger locations create dynamic matches lasting around 10 minutes;
  • Squad Deathmatch: Four squads of 4 players compete to be the first to reach 50 kills. An infantry-only mode with no vehicles, played in compact arenas with a variety of close-quarters combat options. Matches end in 5–6 minutes;
  • Domination: An 8v8 mode inspired by Call of Duty. Teams start from zero and capture objectives until they reach 200 points. Kills don’t count—only control of territory matters. An infantry-only format on smaller maps with 10-minute matches;
  • King of the Hill: A fight for a single capture zone that changes position every minute. Teams of 8v8 earn 1 point per second for controlling the uncontested zone. This 10-minute infantry-only mode, played to 250 points, requires map knowledge and quick rotations between objectives.

Portal: a creative platform where players create their own modes (for example, “Tank Biathlon” or “Hide and Seek”). In BF6, Portal features deep integration with scripts using the Godot-based Logic Editor, allowing players to create full-fledged co-op missions against NPCs.

REDSEC (Battle Royale): a free-to-play Battle Royale mode on the large Fort Lyndon map, with up to 100 players per match (duos or squads). Players collect gear, fight to survive, and complete related objectives within a gradually shrinking zone. This mode is available separately from the main Battlefield 6 game and includes additional Gauntlet formats and creative scenarios through Portal.

Social and technical features:

Battlefield 6 - Social and technical features
  • Server Browser: a full return of the filter system. Players can find servers with specific maps, rules (for example, “Hardcore” or “No Snipers”), and a fixed ping;
  • Persistent lobbies: after a match ends, players stay in the same group, and a vote for the next map begins. This encourages temporary squads and healthy competition;
  • Matchmaking system: moves away from strict SBMM in favor of matchmaking based on connection quality. Player skill is only considered when balancing teams within an already-created lobby.

Key features
